The story of tweed begins in the rugged and wild landscapes of the British Isles, particularly Scotland and Ireland. In the 19th century, local weavers, using the wool shorn from their own hardy sheep, crafted a fabric that was born out of necessity. The harsh climates, with their biting winds and damp mists, demanded a textile that could provide warmth and durability. What emerged was a thick, textured fabric, initially known as “tweed” in Scotland, a term derived from the Scottish Gaelic word for “twill.”

This fabric was not only functional but also deeply rooted in the local culture. It clothed the working classes, from fishermen braving the stormy seas to farmers toiling in the fields. The earthy colors and patterns were inspired by the natural surroundings – the heather-covered moors, the grey stone cottages, and the ever-changing skies.
